On 28.9.2018 the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child with the support of Child Rights Connect organized in Geneva a Day of General Discussion on “Protecting and Empowering Children as Human Rights Defenders”.
The event was attended by 60 children from different countries of the world, and a lot of adult representatives from agencies, organisations and independent authorities working for children’s rights. George Moschos was among them, representing "Initiative for Article 12" (InArt12).
Similar Days of General Discussion (DGD) are organized by the Committee every two years, aiming to sensitize the global community on children’s rights issues. The protagonists in the discussions that took place during the plenary as well as in working groups were children human rights’ defenders. They interacted with adult participants and presented their experiences, opinions and proposals. The children spoke about difficulties faced in their countries and emphasized the need to strengthen human rights education and to promote democracy in schools, to support the more vulnerable children, especially those who have suffered from poverty, violence or war, to develop online campaigns and to reach the most disadvantaged children in places where they live and to organize theatre-pedagogic interventions in the streets, in settlements, in parks, in camps, in refugee centres, etc.
The DGD was a universal reminder both on a symbolic as well as on a substantive level of the great importance that the implementation of UNCRC Article 12 has in children's lives.
